Chronic 2020

Video projection, on photo print, 200*280 cm, 2020.

This artwork uses both photographic and video elements to convey the persistent and cyclical nature of domestic violence. I began by selecting an image of bruises from the internet, symbolizing the physical marks left by abuse. I then burned this photograph and recorded the process on video. Next, I printed the same image again and projected the video of the burning photograph onto it, creating a seamless loop where the video aligns perfectly with the printed photo. This projection continues indefinitely, allowing viewers to witness the continuous emergence of new bruises over the old ones.

This work addresses the harrowing reality of domestic violence against women, highlighting its ongoing and repetitive nature. The idea for this piece stemmed from a poignant conversation I had with a woman who had experienced domestic violence. She asked me to wait until the following week to photograph her bruises, as she anticipated new and more visible ones from her husband’s next assault. This moment profoundly affected me and underscored the fact that domestic violence is not a one-time incident but a recurring cycle of abuse.

By projecting the video of the burning bruises onto the printed photograph, I aim to represent the relentless and unhealing nature of these injuries. Each time the viewer sees the video, they are reminded of the pain these women endure, a pain that never fully heals but is constantly renewed. The burning of the image signifies the destruction and suffering inflicted on the victims, while the endless loop symbolizes the ceaseless cycle of violence.

This artwork serves as a powerful commentary on the enduring scars left by domestic violence, both physical and emotional. It seeks to evoke empathy and awareness in the viewer, urging them to acknowledge the ongoing struggles faced by victims. The projection of the burning bruises over the printed photograph reinforces the idea that these wounds are not isolated incidents but part of a continuous pattern of abuse.
